What are the dimensions of a twin mattress?

A standard twin mattress measures 38 inches wide by 75 inches long  -  3 feet 2 inches wide by 6 feet 3 inches long. Twin is also called "Single" in some retail contexts. It is the smallest standard adult mattress size, 16 inches narrower than a full and 5 inches shorter than a Twin XL. The minimum recommended room size for a twin bed is 7′×10′, though 8′×10′ gives better clearance for furniture and walkable space.

Twin vs Twin XL  -  what is the difference?

A standard twin is 38" wide by 75" long. A Twin XL is the same 38" width but 5 inches longer at 80". Twin XL was originally developed for college dorms and is the default size for most university dorm beds today. For children under 12 and most teenagers, a standard twin is long enough. If your teen is already over 6 feet or approaching it, Twin XL is the better long-term choice. Standard twin bedding and frames are typically less expensive and more widely available than Twin XL.

Is a twin mattress good for adults?

A twin can work for an adult in the right context. At 38" wide it is comfortable for a single sleeper who does not move much, in a smaller room, or in a temporary or guest space. Most adults who sleep on a twin long-term find they would prefer at minimum a full (54" wide), especially if taller than 6′2″. Twin is well-suited for adults using a daybed, sleeping in an RV, or outfitting a home office guest situation. For primary adult sleep, we typically recommend a full, queen, or larger.

For young children (ages 3-9), a medium-firm innerspring or foam is reliable  -  firm enough for developing spines, durable enough for active kids. For pre-teens and teens, a hybrid offers better pressure relief and holds up longer. Key features: strong edge support (kids sit on edges constantly), motion isolation if they share a room or sleep on a bunk, and a washable or removable cover. Standard bunk bed frames are built for twin mattresses. The key dimension is mattress height (profile): most bunk bed manufacturers recommend a mattress no taller than 6-8 inches for the top bunk to ensure guardrail safety clearance. Low-profile foam and innerspring mattresses in the 6"-8" range are the safest and most practical choice for the top bunk. For the bottom bunk, a standard 10"-12" mattress is fine. Avoid pillow tops and thick Euro-tops on the top bunk  -  our staff can confirm which specific models fall within safe height ranges.

What room size do I need for a twin mattress?

The minimum room size for a twin mattress is approximately 7′×10′. The mattress itself is 3′2″ wide, leaving about 2 feet of clearance on each side in a 7′-wide room  -  tight but functional. The recommended room size is 8′×10′, which gives more comfortable clearance and room for a dresser or desk. For a shared kids&rsquo; room with two twins, plan for at least 10′×10′ to accommodate both beds with walkable space between them.

What is the difference between a twin and a full mattress?

A full mattress (also called a double) is 54" wide by 75" long  -  16 inches wider than a twin and the same length. That 16" difference matters significantly for adults sharing a bed, or for a single adult who moves during sleep. For a growing child or teenager who sleeps alone, a twin is enough. For a teenager approaching adulthood or planning to use the same mattress through college, a full gives more room to grow into. Full is the smallest size we recommend for a single adult as a primary mattress.
