What is a hybrid mattress?

The coil system provides responsive support, edge-to-edge stability, and airflow. The foam comfort layers on top contour to your body, relieve pressure, and add motion isolation. Most hybrids have 2-4 layers of foam above the coils, ranging from memory foam and gel foam to latex.

Hybrid vs memory foam  -  which is better?

Neither is universally better  -  they suit different sleepers. Hybrid mattresses are better if you sleep hot (coils promote airflow), prefer a more responsive/bouncy feel, sleep on your back or stomach, want stronger edge support, or sleep with a partner who needs a different firmness. Memory foam is better if you sleep on your side, have pressure point pain, want the absolute best motion isolation, or prefer a deep body-contouring "cradled" feel. The pocketed coil core provides firm, targeted support to keep your spine aligned, while the foam comfort layers cushion pressure points. Back sleepers often do best on a medium-firm hybrid, which supports the lumbar region while allowing slight contouring at the shoulders. If you have lower back pain, a medium or medium-firm hybrid is usually the starting point our specialists recommend.

Coil count matters less than coil quality and configuration. A queen hybrid with 1,000-1,200 quality pocketed coils typically outperforms one with 2,000 thin, lower-gauge coils. Look for: individually wrapped (pocketed) coils rather than connected Bonnell coils; coil gauge between 13-16 (lower number = thicker, more durable wire); zoned coil systems that provide firmer support at the center/lumbar area; and edge support systems with reinforced perimeter coils.
