Who it's for

Who medium mattresses are for.

Five sleeper types for whom medium genuinely outperforms.

Combination sleepers

If you move between your back, side, and stomach during the night, medium firmness is your most reliable match. It provides enough contouring for side sleeping and enough support for back sleeping — accommodating position changes without forcing you to choose.

Couples with different preferences

When one partner prefers firm and the other prefers soft, medium is the most common compromise. It falls reliably in the middle of the firmness spectrum — providing enough contouring for the softer-preference sleeper and enough support for the firmer-preference sleeper.

Most sleepers — the safe default

Medium is the best-selling firmness level across every major brand for a reason: it works for the widest range of sleep positions, body types, and preferences. If you are upgrading from an old mattress and are unsure what firmness to choose, medium is the statistically most likely to be correct.

Side sleepers with average body weight

Side sleepers need enough contouring at the hips and shoulders to relieve pressure without feeling like they are sinking too deep. Medium provides that balance — particularly for sleepers in the 130-220 lb range. Lighter side sleepers may prefer medium-soft; heavier side sleepers may need medium-firm.

Back sleepers with average build

Back sleepers in the 130-200 lb range often find medium firmness ideal — it provides the lumbar support needed to maintain spinal alignment while still allowing a small amount of contouring at the lower back. Heavier back sleepers typically need medium-firm or firm.

A medium firmness mattress rates approximately 4-6 on a 10-point firmness scale. It sits in the middle of the range — more contouring than a firm mattress, but more supportive than a plush or soft. On a medium mattress, you will notice some sinkage as the comfort layers conform to your body, but the support core underneath prevents excessive sag. Medium is described differently by different brands: some brands label their 5/10 as "medium," while others call the same feel "medium-firm" or "comfort." When in doubt, try it in person.
