Adjustable Beds FAQ
Health benefits, mattress compatibility, split king options, and whether an adjustable base is worth the investment.

Adjustable beds let you elevate your head, feet, or both to find your most comfortable position for sleeping, reading, or watching TV. They provide meaningful health benefits for back pain, snoring, acid reflux, and circulation issues. Most modern mattresses (foam, hybrid, latex) are compatible with adjustable bases.
We carry adjustable bases from Tempur-Pedic, Rize, and Leggett & Platt at all five LA showrooms. Same-day delivery with full setup included.
Health Benefits of Adjustable Beds
Adjustable beds aren't just about comfort — they provide real health benefits:
- Back pain relief — Elevating the legs takes pressure off the lower back. A slight incline (15-30°) decompresses the spine and relieves tension in the lumbar area. Many of our customers with chronic lower back pain report significant improvement.
- Snoring and sleep apnea — Elevating the head opens the airway, reducing or eliminating snoring. This is one of the most immediate, noticeable benefits for partners.
- Acid reflux / GERD — Head elevation keeps stomach acid from traveling up the esophagus. Doctors commonly recommend sleeping at a 6-8 inch incline for reflux sufferers.
- Circulation and swelling — Leg elevation improves blood flow and reduces swelling in the legs and feet. Beneficial for people who stand all day or have circulation issues.
- Post-surgery recovery — Adjustable positioning makes it easier to get in/out of bed and find comfortable recovery positions without straining.
Combined with the right mattress for back pain →, an adjustable base creates a complete sleep support system.
Mattress Compatibility
Most modern mattresses work with adjustable bases, but not all:
- ✅ Compatible: Memory foam, hybrid (pocketed coils), latex — these flex naturally with the base's movement
- ✅ Compatible: All Tempur-Pedic, Helix, Stearns & Foster, and Diamond mattresses we carry
- ❌ Not compatible: Traditional innerspring mattresses with interconnected coils — they don't flex well and can break
- ❌ Not compatible: Two-sided flip mattresses — the bottom needs to be flat for the base to function
Important: Using a mattress on an adjustable base it wasn't designed for can damage both the mattress and the base, and may void your warranty. When in doubt, ask in store.
Split King for Couples
A split king adjustable base is two Twin XL bases side by side, each with its own motor and remote. This allows each partner to:
- Choose their own elevation angle
- Raise their head for reading while the other sleeps flat
- Elevate legs independently for individual comfort
You pair it with two Twin XL mattresses (same or different firmness levels). Total dimensions match a standard King (76" × 80").
This is the premium couples solution — each person gets full customization without compromise. The main trade-off is a slight gap down the middle (easily covered with a King fitted sheet or gap filler). See our size guide for Split King details →
Features to Look For
When shopping for an adjustable base, prioritize these features:
- Head and foot articulation — Both should be independently adjustable. Some budget bases only adjust the head.
- Preset positions — "Zero gravity" (head and feet slightly elevated) is the most popular preset for back pain and relaxation.
- Quiet motors — You don't want a loud motor waking your partner every time you adjust. Test the noise level in store.
- Wireless remote + app control — Modern bases offer both physical remotes and smartphone apps.
- USB ports — Built-in USB charging on each side is convenient for nightstands.
- Under-bed clearance — Some bases offer adjustable leg heights for storage underneath.
- Weight capacity — Check the capacity matches the combined weight of the mattress and sleepers.
