Standard Profile 9" Box Spring Universal Flat Foundation
$169 – $389
A foundation or box spring supports your mattress and protects the warranty — most modern foam, hybrid, and latex mattresses need a solid, slatted, or low-profile foundation. Browse Mattress Foundations & Box Springs below — try every model in person at LA Mattress Store before you buy. Free white-glove delivery + assembly in Los Angeles, with haul-away of your old foundation.
A mattress is only as supportive as what sits underneath it. The right foundation keeps your mattress flat, protects the warranty, and sets the height of your bed. Our foundation collection covers traditional box springs, low-profile foundations, solid platform foundations, and bunkie boards — sized from twin through California king. At LA Mattress Stores, every option ships with free white-glove delivery and assembly across Los Angeles.
It depends on your mattress. Innerspring mattresses traditionally pair with a box spring. Memory foam, latex, and hybrid mattresses need a firm, flat foundation or closely-spaced slats (no more than about 3 inches apart) — a springy box spring can actually void the warranty on these beds. If your bed frame already has a solid or closely-slatted deck, you may not need a separate foundation at all. When in doubt, check your mattress manufacturer's support requirements or ask any of our showroom consultants.
Foundations come in every standard size — twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, and California king — to match your mattress exactly. Height is the other decision: a standard 9-inch foundation suits thinner mattresses and traditional bed heights, while a low-profile 5–6 inch foundation keeps a thick modern mattress at a comfortable step-in height. Add your mattress thickness to the foundation height plus the frame to estimate your final bed height before buying.
It's not recommended. Memory foam needs firm, even support; the gaps and flex in a box spring can cause sagging and may void the warranty. Use a solid or closely-slatted foundation instead.
It can if you pair a thick mattress with a standard 9-inch foundation. A low-profile foundation (5–6 inches) solves it — same support, lower height.

What you put under your mattress matters as much as the mattress itself — the wrong foundation can void a mattress warranty, cause premature sagging, or make a brand-new bed feel like a worn-out one. The foundations on this page are matched to every mattress we sell.
The three foundation types. Platform bed (slatted base, no box spring needed — most modern beds); traditional box spring (recommended for innerspring mattresses on metal frames); and low-profile foundation (5–8" tall instead of the standard 9–12", to lower the overall bed height when stacking with a pillow-top mattress).
Slat spacing matters. If you have a slatted platform frame, the gap between slats should be 3" or less for foam and hybrid mattresses, 4" or less for innerspring. Wider gaps cause premature comfort-layer sag (and void most warranties). Bunkie boards solve the problem by adding a flat plywood layer on top of wide slats.
Adjustable-base compatibility. Any mattress that bends without damage (most foams, hybrids, and many latex builds) pairs with an adjustable base — see the adjustable beds collection. The base replaces the foundation entirely; no box spring needed. Free white-glove delivery and assembly across Los Angeles.
It depends on the frame. Platform frames have built-in slat or panel support, so no box spring is needed — the mattress sits directly on the frame. Traditional metal frames and some bed frames do need a foundation or box spring underneath. Each product page notes what it requires; if you are unsure, tell us your mattress and we will confirm before delivery.
For foam and hybrid mattresses, keep slat gaps to 3 inches or less; for innerspring, 4 inches or less. Wider gaps let the mattress sag between slats and can void the mattress warranty. If a frame has wide slats, a bunkie board adds a flat supportive layer on top — we stock those too.
Our frames come in Twin through California King. Match the frame size to your mattress size — a Queen frame fits a Queen mattress. Adjustable-base-compatible frames are noted on the product page. See our mattress sizes guide at mattress size guide for exact dimensions.
