Pocketed Coil Mattresses

Pocketed coil mattresses use individually fabric-wrapped steel springs — each coil moves independently for better motion isolation, targeted support, and superior airflow vs traditional connected-coil systems.

Why pocketed coil

Four advantages over traditional innerspring.

Pocketed coil systems are the modern evolution of the coil mattress — engineered to fix the things connected-coil systems get wrong.

Better motion isolation

Each coil moves independently. Your partner can shift positions without disturbing your side. The biggest improvement over Bonnell coil designs.

Excellent airflow

Open coil structure allows continuous airflow through the mattress. Among the coolest-sleeping mattress types — beats foam in temperature regulation.

Targeted support

Coils respond to local pressure rather than transferring force across the grid. Better contouring at hips, shoulders, and lumbar.

Strong edge support

Reinforced perimeter coils prevent edge collapse. Easier to get out of bed, more usable surface area for couples sharing a queen.

Motion IsolationVery Good — each coil moves independentlyExcellent — foam absorbs motion completelyGood — coil core with foam dampeningVery Good — latex absorbs and isolates
Airflow / CoolingExcellent — open coil structure allows free airflowPoor to Fair — foam traps heat; gel helps but not fullyGood — coils aid airflow beneath foam layersGood — latex sleeps cooler than memory foam
Edge SupportExcellent — coil perimeter holds firmFair — foam edges compress over timeVery Good — coil base reinforces edgeGood — consistent resistance across surface
Bounce / ResponsivenessExcellent — traditional spring feel, easy to repositionPoor — slow response, sinking sensationVery Good — coils provide bounce with foam comfortVery Good — natural bounce, responsive surface
Pressure ReliefGood — depends on comfort layer thicknessExcellent — deep contouring reduces pressure pointsVery Good — foam layers contour over coil supportVery Good — responsive contouring without deep sink
DurabilityExcellent — coils retain shape 8-12+ yearsGood — can soften and sag faster in all-foam buildsVery Good — coil core extends overall lifespanExcellent — natural latex lasts 12-15+ years

Who it's for

Who pocketed coil is for.

Three sleeper profiles for whom pocketed coil construction outperforms.

Couples

The best motion isolation of any coil construction. Each coil moves independently — when one partner shifts, the other doesn't notice. Combined with strong edge support, ideal for shared queen and king mattresses.

Hot sleepers

The open coil structure provides exceptional airflow — pocketed coil mattresses sleep among the coolest of any type. Beats memory foam significantly, even gel-infused foam in many cases.

Back & combination sleepers

Targeted coil response keeps the spine aligned across multiple sleep positions. The combination of coil firmness and comfort-layer give accommodates back sleepers, side sleepers, and those who switch positions during the night.

A pocketed coil mattress — also called a pocket spring or pocket coil mattress — uses individually fabric-wrapped steel coils rather than coils connected in a single grid. Because each coil is encased in its own fabric pocket, it moves independently in response to your body weight. This means that when one person moves on the mattress, the coils under them compress without affecting coils in adjacent areas. The result is superior motion isolation, better-targeted support, and improved airflow compared to older Bonnell or continuous-coil designs.
