Memory Foam Mattress Buying Guide
What is memory foam and how does it work?
Memory foam is a viscoelastic polyurethane material that responds to body heat and pressure, contouring to your shape and distributing weight evenly. When you get up, it slowly returns to its original shape. This reduces pressure points at the hips, shoulders, and joints.
Does memory foam sleep hot?
Traditional memory foam can trap heat, but modern formulations address this with gel infusions, copper infusions, open-cell foam structures, and phase-change covers. Gel memory foam is the most common solution and sleeps significantly cooler than original memory foam.
How long do memory foam mattresses last?
Quality memory foam mattresses typically last 7–10 years. Higher-density foam (4–5 lb/ft³) lasts longer and provides better support than lower-density options (2–3 lb/ft³). Signs of wear include visible body impressions deeper than 1.5 inches and waking up with aches.
