How to Test a Mattress in Store: A Practical Guide
Our recommendations are based on hands-on testing in 5 LA showrooms and feedback from 3,300+ verified customers.

Most people spend less than two minutes on a mattress before making a decision on it. That's not enough time to know anything useful.
A mattress will determine the quality of roughly a third of your life for the next decade. It deserves more than a brief sit-and-bounce test. This guide covers how to approach the process in a way that actually tells you something.
01What to Wear
Wear what you'd wear to bed, or as close to it as practical. If you sleep in lightweight clothing, wear that. If you sleep in heavier layers, account for that difference.
More practically: avoid jeans, belts, or anything that restricts movement or changes how you feel pressure. Jeans on your hip create an artificial pressure point that makes a firm mattress feel harder than it is. Restrictive clothing makes it harder to relax naturally.
Comfortable athletic wear or loose pants work well for most people. The goal is to lie naturally, not to optimize your outfit — just don't make it harder on yourself.
02The 15-Minute Testing Method
There's no magic number, but fifteen minutes per serious candidate gives you meaningful information. Here's how to use that time:
First two minutes: Initial impression Lie in your primary sleep position. Let your body settle. Don't evaluate yet — just notice. Is there immediate discomfort? Does your body feel supported? Allow the mattress to respond to your weight before drawing any conclusions.
Minutes two through eight: Pressure check Still in your primary position, focus attention on your pressure points. For side sleepers: shoulders and hips. For back sleepers: lower back. For stomach sleepers: hips and lower back.
Ask yourself: Are there areas where I feel hard resistance rather than support? Is there a gap between my lower back and the mattress (for back sleepers)? Are my hips sinking noticeably deeper than my shoulders (for stomach sleepers)?
Minutes eight through twelve: Spinal alignment If you're with someone, have them check your spinal alignment from the foot of the bed. Your spine should appear reasonably straight — no visible bowing upward or downward. This is easier to assess than it sounds; obvious misalignment is visible even without measuring.
Minutes twelve through fifteen: Position changes Roll to your back, your other side, your stomach if relevant. How easy is the mattress to move on? Does it respond quickly or slowly? How does it feel transitioning between positions?
If you share a bed, have your partner lie on their side while you test movement transfer on yours.
03What to Test for Each Sleep Position
Side Sleepers
Your shoulder and hip are the primary pressure points. They need to sink in enough that your spine stays neutral — not bowed upward from a firm surface or bowed downward from insufficient support.
Lie on your side for at least five minutes. If you feel hard pressure at the shoulder or hip, the mattress is too firm. If your hips seem to drop significantly deeper than your torso, it may be too soft.
Also test arm extension: does your bottom arm have enough space, or does it feel pinched? A mattress that's too firm often creates shoulder impingement for side sleepers.
Back Sleepers
Back sleeping is the most forgiving position for mattress selection, but lumbar support is still critical. When you lie on your back, there should be a small natural gap at your lower back — and the mattress should fill that gap with gentle support.
Slip your hand under your lower back. If it slides in and out easily with significant empty space, the mattress may be too firm (not filling the lumbar curve). If you can't slide your hand in at all, the mattress may be too soft (collapsing your lower back flat).
You're looking for the mattress to be in contact with your lower back with gentle, consistent support — neither a hard arch nor a collapsed flat position.
Stomach Sleepers
Stomach sleeping requires the hips and torso to remain at roughly the same level. Lie face-down and focus on your lower back. Is there a pronounced arch? Are your hips noticeably lower than your torso?
If you can place your hand flat between your navel and the mattress with more than an inch of clearance, the mattress may be too firm. If your hips feel like they're sinking into a pocket, it's too soft.
Stomach sleepers should also pay attention to neck position: how does the pillow height interact with the mattress surface when you turn your head to the side?
04Questions to Ask the Staff
Good mattress store staff are a useful resource. They've seen hundreds of people test mattresses and can often predict what you'll find before you do. Come prepared with specific questions:
About the mattress:
- What's the coil gauge or foam density in this model?
- How does the comfort layer hold up over five years?
- What's the firmness rating, and how does it compare to the others you've shown me?
- Has this model been updated recently? Is the floor model representative of what I'd receive?
About the process:
- What's your exchange policy if this mattress doesn't work for me at home?
- How long have you had this floor model, and does it match current production?
- Do you offer a trial period?
At LA Mattress Store, every mattress comes with a 120-night comfort exchange. If you bring that up, a knowledgeable salesperson should be able to confirm the details and walk you through the process.
05Red Flags to Watch For
No one gives you time to actually lie down A good mattress shopping experience includes time to genuinely test options. If you're being rushed through a presentation without being encouraged to lie down for a meaningful period, that's a problem.
Firmness claims without explanation "This is our medium-firm" doesn't tell you much. What does the comfort layer consist of? What's the support core? Firmness is the result of construction, not just a label.
Pressure to buy the floor model Floor models are often discounted for a reason — they've had hundreds of people on them and may have already developed slight impressions. If offered a floor model, ask about the age, usage, and any warranty implications.
A mattress that feels great in three minutes Not a red flag exactly, but a caution: the first few minutes on a mattress don't predict what eight hours will feel like. First impressions favor plush mattresses — softness feels luxurious initially but may not support you over a full night. Use the time.
06Why Online Reviews Aren't Enough
Online reviews are useful for filtering out clear problems — widespread complaints about sagging, off-gassing, or poor customer service are worth paying attention to. But they have structural limitations for mattress selection:
Reviews don't account for the reviewer's body weight, sleep position, or pre-existing pain. A review calling a mattress "perfectly firm" from someone who sleeps on their back at 150 pounds is nearly useless for a 200-pound side sleeper.
Reviews also flatten the range of experiences. A mattress can have genuinely positive reviews from some users and cause problems for others — both can be accurate.
The fundamental issue is that mattress comfort is personal and physical. You need to lie on it. Reading about it is research; testing it is the decision.

08FAQ
How long should I spend on a mattress in store?
Aim for at least ten to fifteen minutes per serious candidate, in your actual sleep position. Two minutes is not enough to evaluate pressure relief, support, or how your body settles into the mattress.
Should I bring my partner when testing mattresses?
If you share a bed, yes. Motion isolation, edge support, and firmness preferences may differ. Both partners should test each mattress together, not just individually.
Is it weird to lie on a mattress for a long time in a store?
No. Any mattress store worth your business expects and encourages it. If you feel rushed to move on, that's worth noting — and worth finding a different store.
What if the mattress feels different at home than in the store?
This is common, and it's exactly why exchange and trial policies exist. Your home sleep environment — pillow, foundation, room temperature, sleep position — is different from a showroom. LA Mattress Store's 120-night comfort exchange gives you time to evaluate the mattress under real conditions.
Can I trust online mattress descriptions?
Mattress descriptions accurately convey construction details (coil count, foam layers, materials). What they can't convey is how the mattress feels under your specific body weight and sleep position. Use descriptions to narrow your options; use in-person testing to make the final decision.
