The firmest we carry.
Built for specific sleepers.
An extra firm mattress rates 9–10 on a 10-point scale — the maximum resistance available. Built for stomach sleepers, sleepers over 250 lbs, and those with specific back conditions requiring a maximally firm surface. If a standard firm still feels too soft, this is the next step up.

The very end of the firmness scale.
Firmness is measured on a 1–10 scale. Extra firm sits at 9–10 — the maximum possible resistance. Only for sleepers who genuinely need this level of support.
Two ways to feel extra firm.
Extra firm only comes in two constructions — hybrid and innerspring. Foam and latex don’t typically reach 9–10 firmness without losing their defining characteristics.

How do they actually differ?
Most shoppers who say they want “extra firm” are actually well-served by a standard firm (7–8). True extra firm (9–10) is a narrower use case. Here’s the direct comparison.
| Feature | Firm | You’re hereExtra Firm |
|---|---|---|
| Firmness scale | 7-8 / 10 | 9-10 / 10 |
| Best position | Back, Stomach | Stomach only |
| Body weight | 180-280 lbs | 250+ lbs |
| Sinkage | Minimal | Very minimal |
| Comfort layer | Thin but present | Near-zero |
| Edge support | Strong | Very strong |
| Cooling | Good | Excellent |
| Back pain relief | Back/stomach sleepers | Stomach + specific conditions |
Extra firm is for a specific sleeper.
Unlike other firmness tiers, extra firm has a narrow ideal audience. If you’re not in one of these four groups, a standard firm (7–8) is almost always the better choice.
Dedicated stomach sleepers
Stomach sleeping requires maximum hip support to prevent lumbar hyperextension. If the hips sink, the lower back arches backward and creates significant strain. Extra firm keeps hips level with shoulders - the only way stomach sleeping is sustainable long-term.
Heavier sleepers (250+ lbs)
At 250+ lbs, even a firm mattress (7-8/10) can compress to a medium feel. Extra firm delivers true resistance at higher body weights, ensuring the support level does not diminish under compression.
Specific back conditions
Certain spinal conditions - spondylolisthesis, ankylosing spondylitis, post-surgical protocols - may require the firmest sleeping surface available as directed by a healthcare provider. Always confirm with your doctor.
Floor-sleep transitioners
Some people prefer sleeping on the floor and find standard mattresses too soft. Extra firm provides the flat, rigid surface most similar to floor sleeping while offering a proper foundation - the best transition option.

Extra firm is a commitment. Lie on it first.
Extra firm (9–10) feels dramatically different from firm (7–8) — almost like sleeping on a different piece of furniture. Most shoppers find firm is enough. Lie on both side by side before committing.
