For young children (ages 3–9), a medium-firm innerspring or foam is reliable — firm enough for developing spines, durable enough to handle active kids. For preteens and teens, a hybrid offers better pressure relief and lasts longer as they grow. Key features to look for: durable edge support (kids sit on bed edges constantly), motion isolation if they share a room with a sibling, and a washable or removable cover. The key dimension is mattress height (profile): most bunk bed manufacturers recommend a mattress no taller than 6–8 inches for the top bunk to ensure guardrail safety clearance. Low-profile foam and innerspring mattresses in the 6"–8" height range are the safest and most practical choice for the top bunk. For the bottom bunk, a standard 10"–12" mattress is fine. A full mattress (also called a double) is 54" wide by 75" long — 16 inches wider than a twin and the same length. That 16" difference matters significantly for adults sharing a bed or for a single adult who moves during sleep. For a growing child or teenager who sleeps alone, a twin is enough. For a teenager approaching adulthood or planning to use the same mattress through college, a full gives more room to grow into. Full is the smallest size we would recommend for a single adult as a primary mattress.
