Types of Pillows
Different fills serve different sleep needs. Here is what separates them.
Contour to your head and neck for targeted pressure relief. Ideal for back and side sleepers who need firm, consistent support throughout the night. Slow-response foam reduces partner disturbance.
Best for: Back sleepers, neck pain, support seekers
Natural or blended latex provides responsive support with a buoyant, springy feel. Naturally hypoallergenic, antimicrobial, and resistant to dust mites. Stays cooler than memory foam.
Best for: Hot sleepers, allergy sufferers, eco-conscious shoppers
Soft, plush feel of traditional down without animal products or allergens. Washable and easy to care for. Available in soft, medium, and firm loft levels to suit your sleep position.
Best for: Stomach sleepers, allergy-sensitive, soft feel lovers
Engineered with phase-change materials, gel infusions, or ventilated construction to actively dissipate heat. If you wake up flipping your pillow to the cool side, a cooling pillow solves the problem at the source.
Best for: Hot sleepers, night sweats, warmer climates

Pillow Questions Answered
Sleep position is the single most important factor in pillow selection. Back sleepers need a medium-loft pillow that keeps the neck in a neutral position — too high or too low causes strain. Side sleepers need a high-loft, firm pillow to fill the gap between the shoulder and head. Stomach sleepers should use a very thin, soft pillow or no pillow at all to avoid neck extension. If you switch positions throughout the night, a medium-loft, adjustable pillow gives you the most flexibility.
Memory foam pillows conform slowly to the shape of your head and neck, providing deep contouring and pressure relief. They tend to retain some heat, though gel-infused versions address this. Latex pillows have a faster, bouncier response — they push back rather than mold around you. Latex is also naturally hypoallergenic and antimicrobial. If you prefer a pillow that actively supports your neck rather than cushioning it, latex is typically the better choice.
Most pillows should be replaced every 1 to 2 years. A simple test: fold your pillow in half. If it springs back, it still has life left. If it stays folded, the fill has broken down and is no longer providing adequate support. Flat, lumpy, or odorous pillows are past their useful life. Higher-quality latex and memory foam pillows can last 3 to 5 years with proper care.
If you regularly wake up hot, flip your pillow to find the cool side, or sleep in a warm climate without air conditioning, a cooling pillow makes a real difference. Cooling pillows use phase-change materials, copper or graphite infusions, or open-cell foam to actively move heat away from your head. Combined with a cooling mattress, they can significantly reduce nighttime temperature disruptions.
