About All-Foam

What Is an All-Foam Mattress?

An all-foam mattress is constructed entirely from foam — no metal coils, no springs, no hybrid core. Instead, multiple layers of different foam types are stacked to create comfort, transition, and support. A typical all-foam mattress has a memory foam or gel foam comfort layer on top and a dense high-resilience polyfoam base at the bottom.

What separates all-foam from hybrid and innerspring mattresses is how it responds to your body. Foam is viscoelastic — it softens with heat and slowly molds around your shape, redistributing pressure away from contact points. Unlike the push-back of a coil spring, foam absorbs your weight and holds you in place. This is what gives foam its legendary motion isolation.

All-foam is also inherently silent. There are no metal components to creak or squeak over time, no coil-on-coil noise as the mattress ages. If you share a bed with a partner who moves frequently, or if you are a light sleeper sensitive to sound, all-foam eliminates an entire category of sleep disruption.

Foam Types Explained

All-foam mattresses can contain several distinct foam types, each serving a specific purpose in the comfort system.

Memory Foam

Viscoelastic material that softens in response to body heat, slowly contouring around pressure points. Delivers deep, cradling pressure relief — ideal for side sleepers and those with joint pain.

Gel Memory Foam

Memory foam infused with gel beads or gel swirls to dissipate heat and improve airflow. Retains the pressure-relieving contour of memory foam while sleeping measurably cooler.

Polyfoam / Support Foam

Dense, high-resilience polyurethane foam used as the foundational support core. Provides structural integrity and prevents the mattress from bottoming out under body weight.

Latex Foam

Derived from natural rubber, latex foam offers a buoyant, responsive bounce — very different from slow-contouring memory foam. Naturally breathable and highly durable.

Who Should Choose All-Foam?

All-foam is a natural fit for three types of sleepers in particular.

Side Sleepers

Side sleeping creates intense pressure at the shoulders and hips. All-foam mattresses — especially those with memory foam comfort layers — contour deeply around these pressure points, reducing pain and improving circulation. The lack of coils means no hard spots pushing back against sensitive joints.

Couples

All-foam construction absorbs motion at the source — one partner can move, toss, or get out of bed without disturbing the other. Unlike innerspring mattresses, foam does not transfer movement across the surface. This is the single most requested feature among couples shopping for a new mattress.

Light Sleepers

Foam is inherently silent — no coil noise, no squeaking, no creaking as you shift positions. If you are a light sleeper who wakes easily at sound, all-foam eliminates one of the most common nocturnal disturbances. Combined with superior motion isolation, foam is the quietest mattress type available.

All-Foam Mattresses

Sleep Undisturbed

All-foam construction eliminates the two most common causes of sleep disruption from your mattress: motion transfer and noise. When your partner moves, the foam absorbs it. When you shift, there is no sound. Just uninterrupted sleep — the way it should be.

Buying Guide

All-Foam vs Hybrid: Which Is Right for You?

Choose All-Foam If…
  • You share a bed and want maximum motion isolation
  • You are a side sleeper who needs deep pressure relief
  • You want a completely silent mattress — no coil noise
  • You prefer a cradling, contouring feel over bounce
  • You plan to use an adjustable base (foam flexes freely)
  • You have shoulder or hip pain from a current firm mattress
Consider Hybrid If…
  • You sleep hot and want natural coil airflow
  • You prefer a bouncy, responsive feel when you move
  • You are a back or stomach sleeper who needs firmer support
  • You feel “stuck” in memory foam and want easier repositioning
  • You want durability beyond 10 years (coils last longer than foam)

Perfect PairingAll-Foam Is Ideal for Adjustable Bases

Without a rigid coil structure, all-foam mattresses flex freely with adjustable base articulation. Head elevation, foot elevation, zero-gravity position — all work seamlessly with foam. There is no internal frame to warp or spring system to stress. Pairing an all-foam mattress with an adjustable base gives you the contouring pressure relief of foam plus the postural control of articulation — a combination especially popular for acid reflux, snoring, and lower back pain relief. Every all-foam mattress we carry is adjustable base compatible.

All-Foam Mattress Questions Answered

From our sleep specialists at LA Mattress Store.

An all-foam mattress is built entirely from foam layers — no metal coils or springs anywhere in the construction. Typically, it consists of one or more comfort layers on top (memory foam, gel foam, or latex foam) and a dense polyfoam support core at the base. The absence of metal coils gives all-foam mattresses their signature characteristics: deep pressure relief, excellent motion isolation, and complete silence during movement.
