What Is an Organic Mattress?
An organic mattress is made from materials that have been independently certified to meet organic standards — not just marketed as natural or eco-friendly. The two certifications that matter are GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard) for the latex foam, and GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) for fabric components like cotton covers and wool batting.
What makes certified organic different from conventional is the elimination of synthetic chemicals at every stage. No petroleum-based polyurethane foam. No PBDE flame retardants or boric acid. No synthetic pesticide residues in the cotton. No formaldehyde in the latex processing. Each material is audited by accredited third-party certifiers — not self-declared by the brand.
The result is a mattress that sleeps cool (latex's open-cell structure), lasts 15–25 years (natural materials outlast synthetic foam), and creates the cleanest possible sleep environment — particularly important for people with chemical sensitivities, allergies, or young children.
Certifications Explained
These four certifications are the benchmarks for verified organic and chemical-safe sleep products.
Certifies that all textile components — cotton covers, wool batting — are made from certified organic fibers with strict chemical controls at every production stage.
Certifies the latex foam itself — at least 95% organic raw latex content, no harmful substances, and verified supply chain from rubber tree to finished foam.
Tests every component for over 100 harmful substances including pesticides, heavy metals, and formaldehyde. Ensures no ingredient is harmful — even if not organically sourced.
Certifies low chemical emissions — especially important for children's environments and chemical-sensitive individuals. One of the strictest indoor air quality certifications.
Organic vs Natural vs Eco-Friendly
These three terms are not interchangeable. Only one has independent verification.
GOTS and GOLS certification means an accredited third party has audited the entire supply chain — from farm or rubber tree plantation through manufacturing. Specific standards for organic content percentage, chemical restrictions, and social compliance. Annual renewal required. Cannot be self-declared.
Harvest Green and Savvy Rest both carry GOTS + GOLS certification.
“Natural” means the materials come from natural sources (rubber trees, cotton, sheep). It is not a regulated or certified claim. There is no standard for how much of a mattress must be “natural” to use the term, and no third-party auditing is required. A mattress with 5% natural latex and 95% polyurethane foam could technically be called “natural.”
Natural materials are good. Verified organic materials are better.
“Eco-friendly” is a marketing term with no standardized definition, no required certification, and no third-party verification. Brands can use it freely regardless of actual environmental impact. It may reflect genuine sustainability commitments — or it may be greenwashing. Without certification, there is no way to verify the claim.
Ask for specific certifications. Marketing claims are self-declared.
Layers of an Organic Mattress
Four components — each independently certified, each serving a specific purpose.
GOTS-certified organic cotton ticking. No bleach, dyes, or chemical finishes. Breathable, soft, and free of synthetic pesticide residues — the first surface your skin touches.
GOTS-certified wool acts as a natural flame barrier — no chemical fire retardants needed. Wool also regulates temperature and wicks moisture, keeping you cool in summer and warm in winter.
GOLS-certified latex foam derived from rubber tree sap. At least 95% organic raw latex. Provides responsive support, natural breathability, and lasts 15–25 years without breakdown.
Organic mattresses use wool as a natural fire barrier, meeting federal flammability requirements without PBDE, boric acid, or antimony — chemicals common in conventional mattresses.
Who Should Choose Organic?
Certified organic mattresses are the best choice for these three types of sleepers.
If you react to off-gassing, synthetic fabrics, or chemical finishes, a certified organic mattress eliminates the source entirely. No polyurethane foam, no petroleum-based flame retardants, no synthetic adhesives — just verified natural materials.
Children spend more time asleep and are more vulnerable to chemical exposure than adults. A GOTS + GOLS certified mattress in a nursery or child's room means no chemical flame retardants, no off-gassing foam, and no synthetic pesticide residues anywhere near where they sleep.
Certified organic mattresses are among the most environmentally responsible choices available. Natural latex from sustainably managed rubber trees, GOTS-certified cotton and wool, biodegradable materials — every component is verified, not just marketed as "green."
Sleep Without Compromise
Most mattresses contain chemical flame retardants, polyurethane foam made from petroleum, and synthetic adhesives — materials chosen for cost and convenience, not health. Certified organic mattresses eliminate all of that. Every material verified. Every claim backed by an independent certifier.

Our Organic Brands
Two manufacturers — both independently certified, both available in our LA showrooms.
Organic latex mattresses flex smoothly with adjustable base articulation. Because there is no internal coil structure, the latex bends cleanly at head and foot elevations without stressing the materials. Head elevation for acid reflux, zero-gravity position for back pain, foot elevation for circulation — all compatible. Every organic latex mattress we carry is adjustable base compatible.

A mattress is only truly organic when its materials are independently certified to organic standards — not just marketed as "natural" or "eco-friendly." The two key certifications are GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard) for the latex foam and GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) for the fabric components like cotton covers and wool batting. Both certifications require third-party auditing of the entire supply chain — from farm or rubber plantation through manufacturing. Without certification, there is no verified standard for what "organic" means on a mattress label.
GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) is the leading international standard for organic textiles. For a mattress to carry GOTS certification, all textile components — including cotton covers and wool batting — must be made from at least 70% certified organic fibers (95% for "organic" label, 70% for "made with organic" label). The standard also restricts harmful chemicals in processing and requires social compliance throughout the supply chain. GOTS certification is verified by accredited third-party certifiers and renewed annually.
GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard) certifies the latex foam itself — not just the fabric. For GOLS certification, the latex must contain at least 95% certified organic raw latex. The standard also restricts over 100 potentially harmful substances and requires that the entire supply chain — from the rubber plantation through the finished foam — be audited and certified. GOLS is the only internationally recognized standard specifically for organic latex, and it is the benchmark we look for when evaluating organic latex mattresses.
For many people, yes — for specific reasons. Certified organic mattresses typically cost more because organic raw materials (certified cotton, wool, and latex) cost more to produce and the certification process adds overhead. However, there are concrete benefits: no chemical flame retardants (linked to health concerns in conventional foam mattresses), no off-gassing from polyurethane foam, and a 15–25 year lifespan that significantly exceeds conventional mattresses. Over a 20-year period, an organic mattress often costs less per year than replacing two conventional mattresses. The question is whether the health and environmental benefits matter to you — if they do, the premium is justified.
Organic latex mattresses have a natural rubber scent when new — similar to the smell of fresh rubber — but this is not chemical off-gassing. It dissipates within a few days to weeks of airing out and does not contain VOCs (volatile organic compounds) associated with polyurethane foam. Conventional memory foam mattresses off-gas significantly more due to petroleum-based compounds, adhesives, and chemical flame retardants. If you are chemically sensitive or concerned about indoor air quality, organic latex is one of the cleanest mattress materials available.
High-quality certified organic latex mattresses typically last 15–25 years — among the longest lifespans of any mattress type. Natural latex maintains its elasticity and support far longer than polyurethane foam, which breaks down and loses support over 8–12 years. The organic materials themselves — cotton, wool, and natural latex — are inherently durable. Savvy Rest and Harvest Green both build their mattresses to last decades, not years. Proper care (using a quality mattress protector, rotating occasionally) can extend the lifespan further.
Yes — for several reasons. Natural latex is inherently resistant to dust mites, mold, and mildew, which are common allergen sources in conventional mattresses. Organic wool has natural antimicrobial properties. And critically, organic mattresses do not contain the chemical additives found in conventional mattresses that can trigger sensitivities — no formaldehyde, no PBDE flame retardants, no synthetic fragrances or adhesives. If you have chemical sensitivities, allergies, or asthma, a GOTS + GOLS certified organic mattress eliminates many common chemical irritants from your sleep environment.
"Organic" and "natural" are not the same thing on a mattress label — and the difference matters. Natural means the materials come from natural sources (rubber trees, cotton plants, sheep). It is not a regulated or certified claim — any brand can call their mattress "natural" without third-party verification. Organic means the materials were produced to certified organic standards and independently verified. A GOLS-certified organic latex mattress must contain at least 95% certified organic raw latex and meet strict chemical restrictions throughout the supply chain. "Natural" is marketing. "Organic" with GOTS and GOLS certification is verification.
