Memory foam — technically called viscoelastic polyurethane foam — is a pressure-sensitive material that softens in response to body heat and weight. When you lie down, it slowly contours to your exact body shape, distributing your weight evenly across the surface. When you stand up, it returns to its original form.
The material was originally developed by NASA in 1966 to improve the safety and comfort of aircraft cushions. By the 1980s and 90s, it was adapted for medical use — hospital mattresses and wheelchair cushions — because of its exceptional pressure-relieving properties. It entered the consumer mattress market in the 1990s with Tempur-Pedic, and has since become one of the most popular mattress materials in the world.
The “memory” in memory foam refers to the way it slowly returns to its original shape — it temporarily holds an impression of your body, then gradually recovers. Higher-density foams (4–5+ lb/ft³) provide better pressure relief and durability; lower-density foams are lighter and more responsive but wear faster.
Not all memory foam is the same. Modern formulations address traditional shortcomings like heat retention and slow response.
The original viscoelastic foam pioneered by NASA. Provides deep body contouring and maximum pressure relief. Warmest option — best for cold sleepers.
Infused with cooling gel beads or swirls that absorb and dissipate body heat. Most popular type — balances contouring with improved temperature regulation.
Copper particles infused into the foam provide antimicrobial properties while drawing heat away from the body. Naturally cooling and hygienic.
A portion of petroleum-based chemicals replaced with plant-derived oils. More breathable than traditional foam, faster response, and more eco-friendly.

Memory foam is an excellent choice for these three types of sleepers.
Memory foam is ideal for side sleepers. It contours around your shoulder and hip — the two pressure points that create the most pain and numbness when sleeping on your side. Plush or medium-plush memory foam lets these areas sink in just enough for proper spinal alignment.
Memory foam absorbs movement at the source — when your partner turns over or gets up, you won't feel it. No other mattress material matches memory foam for motion isolation. If one of you is a light sleeper or has different sleep schedules, memory foam is the clearest choice.
Originally developed for medical use, memory foam reduces pressure on joints, muscles, and sensitive areas. It's widely recommended for people with back pain, hip pain, shoulder pain, fibromyalgia, and arthritis. The contouring effect reduces the pressure that causes pain and encourages proper spinal alignment.
The “memory foam sleeps hot” reputation is largely outdated. Modern cooling technologies built into today’s memory foam mattresses actively combat heat retention:

Because memory foam has no rigid internal spring structure, it flexes naturally and smoothly with adjustable base articulation. Head elevation, foot elevation, zero-gravity position, anti-snore preset — all work seamlessly without stressing the foam or voiding your warranty. Every memory foam mattress we carry is fully adjustable base compatible.
Memory foam feels very different from traditional innerspring — and it's different enough that you should feel it in person before committing. At $599 to $6,499, this is not an impulse purchase.

Memory foam is a viscoelastic polyurethane foam that softens in response to body heat and pressure, allowing it to contour precisely to your body shape. Originally developed by NASA in 1966 for aircraft cushioning, it was later adapted for consumer mattresses. When you lie down, the foam redistributes pressure away from pressure points like shoulders and hips — then slowly returns to its original shape when you get up.
Traditional memory foam can trap heat because its dense structure limits airflow. However, modern memory foam mattresses have largely solved this. Gel-infused foam absorbs and disperses heat. Copper-infused foam conducts heat away from the body. Open-cell foam structures allow more airflow. Plant-based foam is naturally more breathable. If you tend to sleep warm, look for gel or copper-infused options — they're widely available across all price points we carry.
A quality memory foam mattress typically lasts 8–12 years. Durability depends primarily on foam density: high-density foams (4–5+ lb/ft³) last significantly longer than low-density foams (2–3 lb/ft³). The brands we carry — Tempur-Pedic, Diamond, Stearns & Foster, Englander, Eastman House, and Spring Air — all use quality foam densities. Tempur-Pedic's proprietary TEMPUR® material is particularly durable, with many mattresses lasting 10–15 years.
Memory foam is frequently recommended for people with back pain. It contours to the natural curvature of your spine, reducing pressure points and encouraging proper spinal alignment. It's particularly effective for lower back pain caused by pressure buildup. That said, the ideal firmness depends on your sleep position: side sleepers typically need softer foam, back sleepers need medium-firm, and stomach sleepers usually need firmer support. Come into any of our 5 showrooms and our specialists can help you find the right fit.
Memory foam is one of the best options for side sleepers. When you sleep on your side, your shoulders and hips create significant pressure points. Memory foam contours around these points and distributes weight evenly, reducing pain and numbness. Plush or medium-plush memory foam is usually ideal for side sleepers. Gel memory foam is especially popular for side sleepers who also run warm.
Foam density is measured in pounds per cubic foot (lb/ft³) and affects both feel and durability. Low density (2–3 lb/ft³): lighter, less expensive, wears faster — entry-level mattresses. Medium density (3–4 lb/ft³): good balance of comfort and durability — most mid-range mattresses. High density (4–5+ lb/ft³): firmer feel initially, superior durability, excellent pressure relief long-term — Tempur-Pedic and premium models. For most shoppers, 4 lb/ft³ or above is the sweet spot for a mattress you expect to keep 10+ years.
Neither is universally better — they suit different sleepers. Memory foam is better if you: sleep with a partner who moves at night (superior motion isolation), have pressure point pain or sleep on your side, prefer a "cradled" contouring feel, and don't overheat at night. Hybrid is better if you: sleep hot and need maximum airflow, prefer a more responsive/bouncy feel, sleep on your back or stomach and need firm support, or want stronger edge support. We carry both types — side by side in all 5 showrooms.
Yes — memory foam is actually ideal for adjustable bases. Because it has no internal coil structure, it flexes smoothly with head and foot articulation without any resistance or damage. In fact, many memory foam mattresses are specifically designed and warranted for use with adjustable bases. All of the memory foam mattresses we carry are adjustable base compatible. Pairing memory foam with an adjustable base gives you the best of both worlds: deep contouring pressure relief plus the ability to elevate, zero-gravity position, and anti-snore adjustments.
