Causes of sleep disorders in seniors
Sleep disorders in the elderly can be caused by several factors. Some are typical for old age, others are related to specific diseases specific to the elderly. However, less need for sleep is quite natural in old age. It results from less activity during the day, which is associated with less need for organism regeneration.
Frequent nocturnal awakening is associated with urinary disorders, and therefore more frequent urination, as well as digestive problems, to which the lying position contributes. In addition, joint pains caused by arthritis or inflammation, as well as feelings of shortness of breath due to weak cardiac activity, are added.
In dementia diseases, e.g. in Alzheimer's disease, there may be a setting sun syndrome, which is manifested by the patient's irritation in the evening and that prevents him from falling asleep.
