Happy 4th of July!

4th of July recipesRecipes for a healthier BBQ

School’s out. Temps are high. And it’s time to celebrate America’s birthday! If you’re like most Americans, a good old fashion barbecue is in your future – and we must say, there’s nothing better than the smell of the grill heating up. Don’t you agree?

As friends and family gather to rejoice in our nation turning 239 years old – though we don’t feel a day over 229 – it’s time to switch up our BBQ menu a bit. A lot of traditional barbecue fair can be heavy and weigh you down, making you sleepy, which can make it hard to stay awake long enough to watch the fireworks. Let’s make this year’s menu a little more catching-fireworks-friendly and less food-coma-inducing.

We’ve gathered some lighter but still delish food options to help ensure everyone makes it to see the fireworks.

Drinks to keep you hydrated

4th of July recipesWith the temperature up there, it’s important to stay hydrated. We’ve have 2 punch options, one for the kids and one for the adults.

Patriotic Punch – This is for the kids and contains a sports drink with electrolytes to ensure dehydration isn’t an issue.

Red, White, and Blue Sangria – This recipe has fresh fruit and lemon juice. Lemon has many energizing powers. Also, this recipe is a good option to help prevent dehydration because of the non-alcoholic components. Remember to rehydrate with a glass of water in between servings to help you sleep better and ensure you don’t end up with a 4th of July hangover the next day.

Grill it up

Hawaiian Chicken Kabobs – Why not go a little tropical? This recipe combines pineapple, chicken, ginger and garlic. It’s low in calories and packed with flavor. Chicken is a good source of protein, giving you the energy needed to make it through the fireworks.  Bonus: Ginger helps with digestion.

Garlic-Mustard Grilled Beef Skewers– Instead of greasy burgers, try these beef skewers marinated in garlic and mustard.

4th of July recipesSides and munchies

Light and Fresh Potato Salad – The title on this says it all! This spin on potato salad leaves out the mayo but still brings the flavor.

Grilled Asparagus and Corn with Tamari and Sesame – This recipe is a great side dish. Asparagus is loaded with antioxidants and vitamin enriched. It’s a light, healthy dish.

Tomato, Watermelon & Basil Skewers – Tomatoes and watermelon sounds like an odd combination but together pack a powerful nutritional punch.
